Mr. Coqbyrne and I met at the Captain Lawrence Brewery yesterday afternoon for a tasting at their taproom. The place is a real brewery, and NOT a brewpub. They just open the taproom on Friday nights from 4 to 7 and again on Saturday afternoons. The have a LOT of traffic in and out of there!! I counted 20 people that went in and out with multiple growlers in about 15 minutes. There were many others tasting, and a few other groups that bought growlers and just hung around drinking them. Coqbyrne and I tasted 3 of their brews. We started with their Pumpkin Ale offering. Very subtle, and just OK in my book. They soon changed out that keg...maybe the new one was better. Then we went to my standard favorite, Pale Ale. As usual, it was good, with some nice grapefruit tones and the right amount of bitterness to balance the maltiness. We walked around the brewery, talking and tasting, getting more involved in our conversations, and forgetting about the beatiful new bottling line, the newly installed whirlpooler, and the additional fermenters that were installed. It made me remember that the best part of tasting beer is the company, and not so much the surroundings. Coqbyrne and I could be in a Turkish prison and not even notice, since we are always fully absorbed in our conversations about family, life, business, aspirations, movies, vacation spots...you name it, we talk about it!
Finally we had the Brown Bird, Coqbyrne's favorite, but for some reason, wasn't as good as usual for him. It was a brown ale, with a roasty flavor, but no real aroma or finish. Maybe it was just that night. Maybe our palates were tainted with the hoppy Pale Ale. But, I ALWAYS recommend Captain Lawrence as a great local brewer...they do an outstanding job. So, if you go for a tasting and are not thrilled with everything you try, don't be discouraged, the next time will be great.
Afterwards, we went to a local pub to grab a burger and anouther CL Pale Ale. The beer was good, but the conversation with Coqbyrne (which continued in the parking lot for another hour) was the best, as always!

I decided to learn and share.....I have started "tasting" beer, and will publish my tasting notes of commercial examples in the FORUMS section of the site. Kristi got me an awesome book called "The Beer Book: Breweries, Tasting Notes, Tours: Your Drinking COmpanion to over 1700 Breweries", edited by Tim Hampson and a foreward by Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione. I need to buy this book. I can't get more than 10 or 15 pages without going into sensory overload. Anyway, this book has inspired me to taste beers. I am using the tasting format from the book, and I will be referring to the BJCP guidelines (www.bjcp.org).
Also, I want to have brewpub reviews on the site. I will try and add a few, but please, add some of your own experiences.....

I just donated a batch of beer to my Church, St. Augustine's Episcopal in Croton. We have an auction every year, and the "winner" gets a free batch of beer, any style, any packaging. I did this last year and the church made $100!

I have decided to stop brewing....all different kinds of beer. I have decided that I should limit myself to 2 or 3 styles, and perfect some recipes. I was thinking about the 3 greatest brewing countries ever: Germany, Belgium and the UK. I want to make American versions of beers of these countries. American versions usually means that they are just "hopped up". So, the beers styles I was thinking of are Irish Red, Belgian Pale and German Altbier. I love all three of these beers and think they are broad enough, yet simple enough to make and will be enjoyed by all types of people. We shall see..

Just got some HUGE help from my good friend and marketing guru, Beery McBeer. Based on a PowerPoint Presentation he put together with a "Pitch" of a business plan, I now have a series of goals I need to meet before starting a business. It all has to do with self promotion and "getting out there". It is more than just this website, but I need to get into ac lub, enter some competitions, actively particpate in the beer community, etc. I also thought of another goalthat I think I can do and actually be good at: I am going to hold a lecture on beer at our local library in the next year...there, it's in print, and I am now committed. The general concepts of the lecture are there, I just have to get into the details.....history of beer, different beer styles, Style Guides and Judging, the basic process, and, of course, a tasting of good examples of different beer styles. I hope the library will let me, or I will have to find a different space. Maybe it will turn into a lecture SERIES....who knows? I can talk for several hours just on ingredients alone. I can talk for hours on the beer process alone....Plus, I have seminar and training experience in my real job! Gotta get some powerpoint slides going!

I have had this site for a week, and i have done almost nothing. Work has become stressful, with imenent layoffs. It is the worst time and the best time to consider brewing professionally. Yes, I have not been brewing long, but it is something I think I would love to do for a profession. I need a business plan, money, location, equipment, and help! Maybe someday.....

I can't believe it, but I am taking my hobby online. I am completely absorbed with brewing. I talk about it, think about it and do it often. I would love to eventually grow this hobby into some sort of business, but I am not there yet. I hope that creating this website and getting some ideas, comments, whatever, will help me mold my potential business.
My friends and family seem to love my beer. I know that they are friends and family, and of course they are goring to support me. They have suggested that I have to figure out ways to "get it out there"....join a club, go to conventions.....basically learn the beer business....see if others like my beer, too. I am apprehensive, of course, as I am only doing small 5 gallon batches and not anything larger. I do formulate my own recipes, and, being an engineer, I love the process and equipment. I coule easily scale up to commercial. I scale up pharmaceutical products every day, so beer will be easy in comparison.
That's it for now. I will most likely write about my latest creations...my thoughts and ideas....I also have to figure out how to get people to the site once I construct it!
